The exhaust system of the Mazda Wankel rotary engine
by Michelle Hendriksen on Dec.19, 2011, under Mazda
The Mazda rotary Wankel engine was developed by Felix Wankel, a German engineer in the 1960s. The company has canceled any new developments on the rotary engine recently. However, each newer version of the engine has been better than the previous with additions such as turbocharging and increased displacement.
Relatively small, lightweight, and yet powerful, this family of rotary combustion engines’ first production was the 10 A series. Its newest RENESIS rotary engine is quite environmentally friendly and with nil CO2 and NOx emissions.
RENESIS, which stands for rotary engine’s genesis, was first exhibited in 1999 at the Tokyo Motor Show. The RX-8 four-door and four-seater car sports car was developed based on the RENESIS engine.
Most of the Wankel engines had a single rotor radius of 105mm and a 15 mm crankshaft offset. The 13A series was the only one which diverged from this basic design. The RENESIS is a two-rotor design with a displacement of 654cc. It generates a maximum power of 184kW at 8500rpm and maximum torque of 22.0 kg-m at 5500rpm. While the previous engines were known for their poor fuel efficiency, this one is a vast improvement in terms of this as well as exhaust gas emissions.
The RENESIS also has its exhaust ports and intake ports in rotor housing 2 which makes it a side-exhaust and side-intake engine. This configuration eliminates the presence of carry-over exhaust gases thus making it more stable in terms of combustion. Reduced exhaust gas flow resistance and delayed exhaust port opening also helps in improving fuel economy as well as raising the power output of the system.
The temperatures in the rotary engines are quite high. These can actually go up to about as high as 1600F in the RENESIS engines. These high temperatures can cause parts such as the mufflers, thermal reactors and catalytic converters to break down. This can lead to excessive noise or restriction in the flow of exhaust gases.
Since retaining the legal levels of emissions is important, an RX-8 vehicle which uses the Wankel rotary engine may require a cat-back exhaust system. Parts which are installed behind the catalytic converter can also be replaced easily and yet the emission status can be retained.
Any new developments on the Wankel rotary engine has been canceled by Mazda. One thing is for sure, however, that the RENESIS, probably the last in the series offers a much better fuel economy and exhaust gas system.

9 Japanese Automakers
by William A. Kozlowski on Oct.08, 2011, under Mazda
Japanese built and designed cars have flooded the North American market for over forty years now. Over time, many nameplates have come and gone, but Japanese cars continue to gain market share and acceptance with a growing number of motorists attracted to their high quality and durability. There are nine Japanese automobile manufacturing companies in existence. Can you name them? Let’s take a look at the list:
Toyota – The second largest automaker in the world is Toyota, maker of the Camry, the Corolla, and a host of SUVs, trucks, passenger cars, and a van. Toyota’s Lexus division produces luxury cars, while its Scion division manufactures youth oriented vehicles.
Honda – The Accord and the Civic are Honda’s two most well known models, followed by the Odyssey minivan, the Ridgeline truck, the Element, and several other passenger vehicles. Acura is the name given to Honda’s luxury car division.
Nissan – Drive a Datsun and then decide. Up until the early 1980s, Nissan’s North American nameplate was Datsun, but was switched to Nissan to give it a more global name. The Sentra, Maxima, and Pathfinder are amongst the division’s best selling vehicles. Infiniti is Nissan’s luxury car division. Renault Motors of France owns a controlling interest in Nissan.
Mitsubishi – Originally imported exclusively by Chrysler, Mitsubishi began to sell cars under its own name in the 1980s. Top selling models include the Lancer, the Eclipse, and the Montero. DaimlerChrysler owns a chunk of the company.
Mazda – The Tribute, Miata, and the “6″ are some of the most well known Mazda models. The Mazda 6′s platform also powers several Ford Motor Company cars including the Mercury Milan. Ford owns an important stake in the company.
Subaru – Think all wheel drive and you may just think Subaru. The Forester, Outback, and Legacy are all top selling Subaru models. Fuji Heavy Industries [FHI] owns Subaru; General Motors has a 20 percent stake in FHI.
Suzuki – 20% owned by General Motors, Suzuki is as noted for producing cars as it is for manufacturing motorcycles. The Grand Vitara is one of its most noted models.
Isuzu – Did someone say General Motors? Again, GM owns a stake in Isuzu. At one time Isuzu imported cars to the US, but those days are over. Currently, Isuzu has a miniscule presence and the two vehicles they do sell – the Ascender SUV and I Series pick ups – are simply rebadged GMC vehicles.
Daihatsu – The Charade and Rocky were two models introduced by Daihatsu when the car company started selling vehicles in North America in 1988; four years later its North American operations were closed. In 1999, Toyota assumed controlling interest over the company.
So, there you have it: there are nine Japanese automakers, two of which are still independent. Much like the American market further consolidation is likely with nameplates disappearing entirely just like the Packard, Hudson, Oldsmobile, Plymouth, and a host of other North American nameplates have driven off into the history books.

The Mazda Millenia – For People Interested In Great Cars
by Andy Zain on Nov.25, 2009, under Mazda
Are you interested in gaining some knowledge on the ever so popular Mazda Millenia? If so, then you have come to the right article as we are big fans of this lovely little vehicle. Right now, we would like to take the time to share some knowledge with you on this very much loved vehicle. Are you ready to learn some interesting details? Sure you are, so continue forward as we tell you about some of the features you will find on this vehicle.
The Millenia range was Mazda’s solution to the discontinuation of the 929 during the year’93. Although the company wanted to present this new set of luxury sedans to the world with the launch of the premier sub brand Amati, due to financial restraints, the launch was held back.
This, however, did not deter the release of the Xedos 9 and the Eunos 800 – two of the models released under the Mazda Millenia label in Europe and Japan.
These 4 door, 5 passenger luxury sedans had the trendy design exteriors, complete with thicker paint finishes, and the Miller Cycle engine. The 2. 3L engine, coupled with a horsepower of 210hp and a torque to match, made driving an extremely enjoyable experience, especially in the Japanese 4-wheel drive models.
This sedan was in production for ten years until the year 2003 with a five-speed manual and a four speed automatic model. All the models that were released in the ten-year period were sleek and racy with a sports car look not normally associated with a luxury sedan.
If you are going in for a second hand model of this car, try and get your hands on either the’99, 2001, or 2002 models. In celebration of the millennium, the Mazda millenia came out with a special edition model, which came in two extremely trendy and classy colors, 17 inch wheels and a six cd changer.
Although the model has gone out of production, you can still buy used Mazda millenias. Just make sure you pick a model that was released after the year’99. In fact, during the years 2001 and 2002, the models released had with a strengthened body structure, stabilizing bards for better handling and as with all the models prior to it, came with an internal BOSE audio system.

All Roads Lead To Mazda MPV!
by Andy Zain on Nov.16, 2009, under Mazda
Are you interested in learning about the Mazda MPV? If so, then we would like to take you by the hand and tell you about an outstanding vehicle.’89 was quite the year! In Egypt a 4400 year old mummy was found, the movie Batman released and at 01:23:45 AM the time and date by US reckoning was 01:23:45 6-7-1989! It was also the year that the Mazda MPV arrived in America. While it was not the first player in the modern mini van medley, Mazda rocked when Chrysler only rolled! The first real, for every road, in all kinds of weather all-wheel drive had arrived. We must say that this vehicle got a big applause when it first came out on the market. Critiques and customers both stared at it…
It scored well on aesthetic standards; it offered a more compact design with traditionally hinged doors. Powered by a four-cylinder or optional V6 engine with standard rear wheel drive.
In 2000, a second edition machine was released. This new seven passenger, minivan with front-wheel drive was still smaller than its competition boasting an array of new family friendly features.
First in class multi configurable seating designs and roll down windows in sliding doors were bold innovations reminiscent of its early spirit. Flexibility, maneuverability matched with design defined this drive. The versatility of its seating system was a signature feature.
In addition it offered an array of new features. The roll down window system was a first in the sliding door format, however it was the innovative multi configurable seating deign that was to be its trademark edge. Maneuverability, versatility, design and flexibility set this machine in a class of its own.
The second row passenger seats came with an innovative slide feature offering bench configuration. Another convenience feature was presented in the form of a fold down mechanism in the third row seats, which could also be rotated round to face the rear of the minivan when the tailgate was open. The seating system did however have one drawback, cargo space. The lack of it was a disadvantage in its positioning as the perfect family carrier.
While the improvements were many and significant with features like keyless entry, convenient slide open doors, CD entertainment systems, cruise control, individually heated mirrors and passenger seat air conditioning this new installment of the MPV continued to disappoint the key performance area of engine power. In the years that followed numerous steps were taken to improve the power of the vehicle however this remained an area in which competition was stronger. The power upgrades in 2002 included a 3. 0liter 200HP V6 and automatic five-speed transmission, 17inch alloys, upgraded break systems, improved suspension tuning and power side-slide door mechanisms. Then again in 2003 a family entertainment theater system by way of a DVD player was introduced as an optional feature. The Mazda MPV had found its niche; versatile space management, entertainment and space efficient design features keeps it relevant to the family market.
